Les Lumières ROUGE: From 1785 till 1805: the French Revolution in Fashion
In partnership with the University of Melbourne
The French Revolution was a defining event for the last decades of the 18th century. In the space of only 20 years, French fashion evolved at a speed never seen before. Coinciding with the abolition of the absolute monarchy, clothing became the focus of intense scrutiny, controversy and radical change. While fashion has been used for centuries to display markers of identity or ideology, it became a particularly powerful symbol of identification during years surrounding the Revolution.
