The French Revolution: New perspectives in the context of global history

Presented by Professor Pierre Serna (University of Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne) with comments by Professor Peter McPhee (University of Melbourne). Pierre Serna has published widely on the French Revolution and has spoken publicly around the world on the Revolution and its continuing influence and relevance. Peter McPhee is Melbourne’s own expert on the French Revolution. His many publications have brought the Revolution to life for readers and scholars around the world. This talk is presented jointly by the University of Melbourne, School of Historical and Philosophical Studies and the Bastille Day French Festival. William Tell, Victorian Opera

Bastille Day French Festival has secured an exclusive special sneak-peek at the 1st Act in a general dress rehearsal of Rossini’s masterwork William Tell, presented by the Victorian Opera for the first time in Australia for 140 years. Befitting an epic opera, this will be the largest production Victorian Opera has ever staged with the greatest international contingent, the biggest chorus (48 members) and the most costumes created for a single production. It will be epic in all senses of the word. So, if there’s one operatic event you want to be there for in 2018, it’s William Tell. Join us for Champagne and macarons in the foyer of the newly renovated Palais Theatre before a pre-performance talk by Conductor and Victorian Opera Artistic Director Richard Mills.
